01. What is health & wellness?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “ complete, physical, mental, and social well-being and not just the absence of disease or infirmity”. Wellness is often understood as the interaction of seven dimensions: physical, social, emotional, mental, spiritual, occupational, and environmental. To achieve optimal wellness and quality of life, a person seeks to move toward the positive side of an illness-wellness continuum on all seven dimensions.

02. What is wellness coaching?

Coaching specialization that builds on expertise in areas related to health, wellness, and fitness while relying on relevant theories and methods from the coaching field. Wellness coaches may work with clients who have specific health, wellness, and fitness goals as well as with clients who have personal or professional goals that can be facilitated through understanding actions related to health and wellness. It involves the creation of meaningful goals and the design of viable and robots action plans in the areas of health, wellness, and physical fitness.

03. What are the benefits of hiring you?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, in the United States, 6 in 10 adults have a chronic disease and 4 in 10 adults have 2 or more. The greatest burden of chronic diseases are related to modifiable lifestyle behaviors (i.e., nutrition, physical activity, tobacco use, excessive alcohol use, and poor sleep quality).

04. Does wellness coaching work?

Wellness coaching is effective in improving health outcomes. According to a recent study, coaching “results in clinically relevant improvements in multiple biomarker risk factors (including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and cardiorespiratory fitness) in diverse populations.”

05. What are some of the most common goals?

• Adopting a healthy lifestyle (i.e., nutrition, physical activity, & stress management)
• Decreasing unhealthy habits and behaviors
• Work-life integration
• Integrating mindfulness into daily life
• Incorporate self-care practices

06. What is the role of the coacH?

The role of the health & wellness coach is to inspire, empower, and partner with you in achieving your desired goals. Your role is to drive the development of a co-created action plan and goals. In collaboration, you and your coach will work together to ensure your goals align with your optimal wellness vision, are achievable, and can be self- regulated.

07. How long does it take to form a new habit?

Forming new habits takes time. In general, the more times an action is repeated the more likely it will become a habit. Habits are behaviors that one does without thinking about it. For example, if you're a coffee drinker and you make a cup of joe without putting thought into it, it's a habit. The act of brushing your teeth each morning without thinking about it, is a habit. Although the data varies regarding the exact time to change a behavior to a habit, the point is behavior change takes time.

08. What area of wellness do you specialize in?

At Peace & Soul Wellness, we specialize in helping women of color who struggle with work-life balance integrate healthy lifestyle habits through lifestyle wellness coaching.
